From The Chair: Intro to the Race Director Series

My top hobby in RC actually has nothing to do with radio controlling anything. I enjoy putting on good races! During my first track ownership stint, I ended up calling many of the larger off-road races around the state of Texas, several years worth of RCPro arena finals, and the first few years of the Southern Nationals. Plus, of course, some fifteen years of RDing my own tracks’ weekly race program. What I’m trying to say here is that I’ve got a decent bit of experience as RD and announcer for RC racing.

Upon deciding to include a blog function here at RC Threadz, I also decided to do a section to help less experienced RDs improve their craft. I don’t know if these posts have any applicability to other disciplines, but I hope that what I share can assist you in your on road, off-road, and dirt oval race programs.

Whether you’ve done some RDing or none at all, I’m confident that anyone can do a good job in the RD’s chair as long as they CARE about doing a good job. I’ve raced under RDs that range from horrible to amazing, and the biggest difference always amounts how much interest they have in doing a good job.

So put your phone down. Pay attention. Settle into the chair and sit up straight. Your performance can help give racers a great day at the track! I sincerely hope this series helps someone become a better RD.

If this series does help or inspire you to improve as an RD, I would truly love to hear about that!
